In online fraud cases, time is everything. Scammers transfer money across multiple accounts within hours. The faster you act, the higher the chance of freezing the money before it is withdrawn or laundered. Here is exactly what to do:
1930 is the National Cyber Crime Helpline operated by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C). Call immediately after discovering the fraud — the helpline can initiate an emergency freeze on the fraudulent account. Even if full recovery is not possible, partial recovery is often achievable within the first few hours of reporting.
File an online complaint at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Choose the “Financial Fraud” category. Provide all transaction details: UTR numbers, recipient account numbers, UPI IDs, and screenshots of all communications with the scammer.
For amounts above ₹1 lakh or complex scams, file an FIR at the Pune City Cyber Police Station or your nearest police station. Carry:
File a written complaint with your bank. Under RBI guidelines, banks have defined liability for fraudulent transactions. If you did not share OTP or banking credentials and the fraud occurred through a system breach or impersonation, the bank may be liable for reimbursement. File within 3 days of the fraud for the strongest legal position.
International cyber fraud is handled through the I4C and coordination with foreign agencies via Interpol. Recovery is significantly harder once funds leave India, but not impossible — particularly if transferred to countries with Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs) with India. Report immediately to 1930 and engage a lawyer who can coordinate with the cybercrime unit on international recovery efforts.
The cyber cell typically acknowledges complaints within a few days. Account freeze requests are processed fastest — often within 24–48 hours if you reach out through the 1930 helpline immediately. Formal investigation and FIR registration may take 1–4 weeks depending on the complexity of the fraud. Following up through a lawyer can significantly expedite the process.
If the cyber cell freezes the destination account before the scammer withdraws the money, recovery through a court order is possible. Courts can direct the bank to release frozen funds to the victim after proper verification. The success rate is highest for complaints filed within the first few hours and decreases significantly after 24–48 hours as scammers move money quickly through multiple accounts.
